The capacity to understand, speak, read, and write in English is referred to as the English proficiency. It is often tested by evaluating an individual’s abilities in areas such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, comprehension, and fluency.
A high level of English proficiency is advantageous in many spheres of life. First, English proficiency is required for students wishing to pursue higher education overseas or to attend international universities where English is the medium of teaching. This enables them to comprehend lectures, actively participate in discussions, and successfully finish coursework. Second, because English is a global language of business communication, many multinational corporations require personnel with solid English abilities.
A strong command of the language improves job prospects and opens doors to opportunities, both at home and abroad. There is travel and communication, and English is a lingua franca around the world, so knowing it allows for easier conversation while traveling or connecting with people from different countries or cultural backgrounds. Last is information access; the majority of Internet content is available in English, such as research articles, novels, and news websites. Proficient individuals can access a large amount of knowledge in a variety of subjects without relying on translations or interpretations.
In support of student’s English proficiency, the International Affairs Bureau of UMP held the Stadium Generale for new students of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences and Communication, Faculty of Education and Teacher’s Training, and Postgraduate. The event occurred on Thursday, August 3, 2023, on the 10th floor of the A.R. Fachrudin Hall of the UMP Tower, promoting “Developing English Proficiency for Studying and Working Abroad” with the international speakers coming from City University of New York (CUNY), America. Opened by the Vice-Rector of Research, Innovation, and Human Resources, Dr Anwar Ma’ruf, M.T., the program aimed at enthusing new students to take more opportunities and make experiences globally with their English skills.
The event was instigating since the native professors shared with the students in a fun and moving way. They boosted the students to explore and improve their English to achieve success by watching videos, singing songs, etc. The professors made the entire hall cheerful since they invited every student to play games and sing together as a fun way of using English.
Last but not least, Professor Linda added that every student should be able to work under pressure, solve problems, challenge themselves, and be persistent in making their future.
